Vancouver Island University – 2012/2013 Entrance Scholarships and Awards
Are you hoping to attend Vancouver Island University in September? The application for the 2012/2013 VIU Entrance Scholarships & Awards is now available on their website at www.viu.ca/financialaid/applications.asp Students should complete applications online, print, sign and submit directly to the Financial Aid Office by the March 15th deadline.
VIU President’s Entrance Scholarships 2012
Students are selected for this full tuition scholarship by the school principal as the top academic student in grade 12 for students who select VIU as their university of choice. This scholarship is renewable for up to 5 years while in attendance at VIU – a total value of approximately $20,000.
Any student attending VIU next year who wishes to be considered for this scholarship, please talk to your counsellor.
Soroptomist Club – The Violet Richardson Award $500
The Soroptomist Club is again offering The Violet Richardson Award of $500 for a Grade 12 girl who participates in volunteer work at school or in the community. Application deadline is December 1, 2011. For more information, please see your counsellor.
Excel Career College $2,000
Excel Career College has been offering a wide range of Diploma programs as well as individual courses, each designed with student needs and the current labour market in mind. Excel strives to continually improve their training and professional leadership and provide students with an effective, respectful and relevant learning experience. Excel Career College is registered and accredited with the Private Career Training Institutes Agency (PCTIA), and members of the National and BC Career Colleges Associations. Excel’s unique schedule and individual customization of programs makes them the perfect choice to build your career. Excel Career College is offering a bursary of $2,000 towards tuition of a full-time career program at Excel Career College. Your application (which you can pick up in Student Services) must include a one page essay on why you would like to attend Excel. The application deadline for students is December 5, 2011 and for January 2011 Graduates.
BigSun Scholarship
The BigSun Organization is proud to be able to continue to help young athletes succeed in their academic pursuits. We are offereing an annual scholarship to a deserving student. All student athletes are eligible for this award, regardless of which sport they are participating in.
Deadline: June 22, 2012
Amount of Award: $500.00
The successful applicant will be a high school senior or be attending a post secondary institute and currently involved in some sport at that institution or in the community. Please visit the website at:

POST SECONDARY FINANCIAL AID
Grants, bursaries and scholarships are wonderful resources to help you finance your post-secondary education because they provide money that does not need to be paid back.
Scholarships are usually awarded based on merit rather than financial need.
Grants and bursaries are usuallyawarded based on:
- financial need
- academic achievement
- athletic skill
- special abilities that may also be considered
Every post-secondary institution has a financial aid office providing access to their bursary and scholarship programs as well as government and private organization programs.
LOANS
Loans are given to students proving financial need with repayment beginning after leaving post-secondary education. The criteria vary from year to year so it is important to revisit the website each year.

GOVERNOR-GENERAL’S BRONZE ACADEMIC METAL
Commencing in 1984, a Bronze Academic Medal, authorized by the Governor-General, will be awarded to the student with the highest academic standing from Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School’s graduating class.
DISTRICT AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS
District Scholarships are awarded to graduating students who have excelled in fields other than academics. students must fill out an application form available in Student Services which is due by June 1st. Students who are awarded a district scholarship receive a $500 cheque and a $500 voucher that can be redeemed upon registration at a post-secondary institution.
PASSPORT TO EDUCATION
The Passport to Education program exists to achknowledge the accomplishments of BC Secondary School Students in Grade 10 to 12 in a broad range of academics and non-academic areas. Passport stamps are cumulative to a maximum of $1,000 by Grade 12.
Their values are: Grade 10 – $250 Grade 11 – $250 Grade 12 – $500
Passport stamps must be redeemed within five years of graduation. Grads who have earned Passport to Education stamps can pick them up in late August at the school office.
SECONDARY SCHOOL APPRENTICESHIP SCHOLARSHIPS MAXIMUM $1,000
